The Moroccan Tbourida

The Tbourida, or Moroccan Horse Ceremony is one of the better known festivals in Morocco. It is a traditional equestrian performance that holds deep cultural significance in Morocco and dazzles the Moroccan and International public. It is a spectacular display of horsemanship, bravery, and traditional military skills that dates back centuries and remains an integral part of Moroccan heritage and identity.
The main attraction of tbourida is the synchronized firing of muskets while riding horses. It is associated with festivities such as moussems, agricultural festivals and many national and family celebrations. Abroad it is often known as ‘Fantasia’

When battles were still fought on horseback, Berbers were skilled horseman and their skill was a strong asset in battle. Today this same horsemanship is showcased as a performance during or at the closing of a Berber wedding celebration. They will also perform at religious or cultural celebrations. There are many Fantasia groups in Morocco, and tournaments are held across the country each year.

The Tbourida, derived from the word Baroud which means “gunpowder”, is an ancient equestrian art, dating from the 15th century.
Each parade of Tbourida is performed by a troop, called “Sorba”, consisting of an odd number of riders and horses (from 15 to 25), lined up and in the middle of which stands the chief of the tribe, the “Mokaddem”, with his mount.

These riders line up on their horses adorned in traditional dress. They rush forward at great speed for about 200 meters before firing their old gunpowder loaded weapons, into the air, in unison. The thunderous sound of the muskets firing in harmony creates a breathtaking and awe-inspiring spectacle. The riders have to not only keep their horses in a straight line while charging forward but have to also fire a single shot at the very same moment as their fellow riders.

From generation to generation, the Tbourida retains a strong spiritual dimension, particularly because it puts the horse, the sacred animal of Islam, at the center of a breathtaking and impressive spectacle.

The performance is an exhilarating colorful display of expert riding and a unique cultural experience that gives an insight into the country’s traditions, history, and values.
